Overview

This unit introduces the concepts, standards and techniques associated with the current professional practice in GIS&T in professional and organisational settings. You will investigate the nature of professions generally and the characteristics of the professions that occupy the GIS&T field in particular, and learn a range of concepts, techniques and professional issues, including professional communications, human resources and conflict resolution, teamwork, project management practice, social impacts of GIS&T, and applications of professional ethics and relevant legal frameworks. Practical and real-world case studies will be used as part of the learning to help you build knowledge and enhance skills to meet challenges in professional practice in the workplace.

Learning outcomes

  1. Analyse and criticise wider issues and problems concerning professional practice in GIS&T;
  2. Comprehend, conceptualise and interrogate ethical, legal and social issues arising from locational privacy and cartographic integrity using appropriate frameworks;
  3. Demonstrate awareness of and have gained skills in aspects of professional practice including conflict resolution, leadership, and team dynamics;
  4. Demonstrate understanding of multiple aspects of intellectual property and its protection;
  5. Describe and apply skills relating to professional practice in GIS&T project management;
  6. Construct and deliver effective written and oral communication appropriate to GIS&T professionals, including original written inquiries, critiques, and case study analyses.

Workload

A total of 24 hours per week: • Attendance at seminars and applied sessions (4 hours per week); • Watching lecture videos (1.5 hour per week); • Preparation for the seminar (approximately 1.5 hours per week averaged over the semester); • Preparation for the applied sessions (approximately 2 hour per week averaged over the semester); • Preparation for practitioner interviews, including questionnaire design, searching and selection of organisations and practitioners (approximately 0.5 hours per week averaged over the semester); • Conducting the project and preparing the project report (approximately 3 hour per week averaged over the semester); • Taking quizzes (0.5 hour per week); • 11 hours of independent study and research per week.
