Overview

This unit develops your ability to define, plan and implement GIS and remote sensing projects in research and industry. It covers the fundamentals of doing research and the foundations of project management, which are relevant to GIS and remote sensing scientists and professionals. These mainly include definition of objectives; critical review of literature and identification of research gaps; data collection and fieldwork methods; project planning, execution and monitoring; project management methodologies; oral and written communication; document preparation and version control; verification and validation of project outcomes. In addition, this unit discusses intellectual property and research integrity. Group work will be conducted to develop a project plan for a GIS or remote sensing research or industry project.

Learning outcomes

  1. Systematically search and critically assess relevant literature in order to identify research gaps and/or investigate specific problems in a GIS/remote sensing project;
  2. Formulate or design a GIS/remote sensing research project;
  3. Evaluate, identify and apply research methodologies and techniques for spatial data collection and analysis appropriate to a research design or project;
  4. Explain standard project management approaches;
  5. Develop a project management plan;
  6. Identify the ethical and professional issues that may arise in GIS/remote sensing research and address them in practice;
  7. Carry out a research project professionally and ethically;
  8. Interpret and communicate research outcomes orally and in writing.

• 2-hour lectures; • 2-hour workshops; • 2-hour preparation before each workshop and • 6-hour independent study per week.
