Overview

This unit focuses on the recent economic and social development of selected Asian economies, especially the role of the business sector. It explores the development state of selected Asian economies and the stages, causes and consequences of their economic growth. The growing internationalisation of these economies, in particular the stages of their business growth, processes and outcomes of economic policy reforms will also be examined.

Learning outcomes

  1. apply basic concepts of economic analysis to an understanding of Asian economies
  2. describe and interpret emerging economic trends in the Asian region, specifically in the selected Asian economies
  3. appreciate the main characteristics of the business environment in the selected Asian economies
  4. understand the role of government and the market as allocators of resources and engines of development
  5. critically evaluate the dynamics of growth and change in selected Asian economies.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
