Overview

This unit examines how technological change drives economic growth and business transformation through key economic frameworks such as creative destruction and endogenous growth models. You will analyze the determinants of technological progress and its diffusion across markets, with a focus on productivity growth and how businesses adapt to and leverage innovation. Through case-study-based learning, the unit provides practical insights into the economic and business impacts of technological disruption, preparing you to evaluate real-world challenges in global markets using economic theories and evidence.

Learning outcomes

  1. Apply economic theories to evaluate the relationship between technological progress, productivity growth and economic growth
  2. Assess the role of international trade, investment and institutional environments in technological adoption and diffusion across businesses and economies with particular emphasis on emerging markets
  3. Apply digital and analytical tools to critically assess contemporary business and economic challenges arising from technological change
  4. Evaluate how firms develop and implement strategies to navigate technological disruption and innovation, using economic mechanisms, empirical evidence and case studies

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
