Overview

This unit provides an introduction to labour economics, emphasising various theoretical models of the labour market. The unit examines how workers and firms make decisions in the labour market, the operation of labour markets, including the role of institutions in the labour market, wage differentials, impact of unions and government on labour markets, labour quality, labour market discrimination and anti-discrimination policies. Special attention is given to the current labour market conditions.

  1. understand the core concepts and tools of labour economics and policy
  2. apply economic principles to analyse the operation of labour markets critically
  3. critically evaluate government policies affecting labour markets
  4. recognise the critical issues involved in labour markets
  5. apply analytical skills developed through an analysis of continuing change in the labour market and labour market policy.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
