This unit introduces you to the requirements of university study. It provides you with a range of specific capabilities that are essential for engaged and successful undergraduate study. The unit content is arranged around the relationships between the learner, the university's requirements and the expectations of students. You are introduced to the rigours of university learning and the ranges of scholarly traditions and practices. Emphasis is given to the importance of independent learning in university studies.

Learning outcomes
- understand the principles and expectations of university scholarship
- employ relevant theoretical and practical knowledge in a range of skills central to university learning, including critical reading and writing
- exercise the skills necessary to maximise their learning from lectures, tutorials and teaching materials
- produce essays and reports that present a critical argument and adhere to the conventions of academic presentation.
Workload
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: • 24 hours of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
