This unit will introduce you to the requirements of writing for academic purposes. It will provide you with a range of composition skills that are essential for producing academic essays, reports and reviews. The unit will introduce writing styles and conventions appropriate to university study and provide you with practical insights into structuring cohesive academic essays and reports. You will be introduced to the various styles and genres of structuring and composing writing for academic purposes. Emphasis is focused upon understanding the detailed requirements of written assignments, referencing, and developing the necessary form and structure appropriate to the required task.

Learning outcomes
- Understand the components of written academic compositions
- Structure written academic pieces, demonstrating cohesive sentence and paragraph structuring to progress a coherent argument and perspective
- Have well developed referencing and attribution practices that adequately cite the work of contributing sources
- Produce essays and reports that present a critical argument and adhere to the conventions of academic presentation.
Workload
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: • 24 hours of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
