Overview

This unit introduces you to the sociocultural foundations of health and physical education. Using the sub-disciplines of history, philosophy, psychology, sociology and cultural studies, you will examine the role of these areas in shaping and determining contemporary practices in health and physical education. You will learn that personal and contextual factors, together with individual and group actions, shape health, wellbeing, safety, identity and participation in physical culture such as physical activity, movement, exercise, sport and recreation. You will develop your understandings through the application and critique of historical and contemporary practices within health and physical education.

Learning outcomes

  1. identify and describe historical, philosophical, sociological, psychological, cultural and political drivers of knowledge and practice in health and physical education, health, physical activity and sport
  2. evaluate the influence of sociocultural factors on historical and contemporary policies and practices in health and physical education, health, physical activity and sport contexts
  3. describe how sociocultural factors shape wellbeing, safety and participation in health and physical education, health, physical activity and sport
  4. analyse how varied and changing personal and contextual factors shape understandings of, and opportunities for, health and physical activity locally, regionally and globally
  5. demonstrate academic skills of accessing appropriate quality sources of information, extracting relevant information, summarising and communicating effectively.

Workload

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: • 24 hours* of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement. *Subject to variation due to professional experience requirements
