This unit facilitates you to engage with Health and Physical Education (HPE) curriculum, assessment and pedagogy in early childhood and primary contexts, and enables you to apply this knowledge to your practice. The unit increases your knowledge, skills and understanding of teaching and learning strategies to deliver developmentally appropriate health and physical education. In addition, strategies for supporting the wellbeing and safety of learners in a variety of educational and community settings will be explored.

Requisites
Learning outcomes
- analyse health and physical education curriculum and practice
- design and organise content into an effective learning and teaching sequence that is developmentally appropriate for early childhood and primary learners
- describe a variety of physical education specific pedagogies such as creative games, fundamental motor skills and game-centred approaches, and discuss how they promote physically educative experiences
- describe and apply health and wellbeing education concepts, including strategies for supporting learner wellbeing and safety.
Workload
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: • 24 hours* of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement. *Subject to variation due to professional experience requirements
