Overview

Teachers of all discipline areas, including health and physical education, must share in the responsibility of educating literate and numerate students. In this unit, the teaching of literacy and numeracy is examined from a number of current theoretical perspectives, drawing on contemporary research. You will learn how to analyse tasks for the literacy and numeracy demands in health and physical education, implement appropriate teaching strategies that maximise student learning, and address the literacy and numeracy needs of students who come from diverse backgrounds.

  1. explain the importance of literacy and numeracy in learning, drawing on contemporary research
  2. identify literacy and numeracy learning demands within the health and physical education learning area
  3. demonstrate knowledge of pedagogies that support literacy and numeracy development, including those who come from diverse linguistic backgrounds.

Workload

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: • 24 hours* of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement. *Subject to variation due to professional experience requirements
