This unit focuses on educational leadership as defined in policy and enacted in practice. It will examine the concept of leadership in the development and leading of high-quality educational programs for all children. You will learn to engage with and develop an understanding of the policy context in relation to leadership in early childhood. Examining policy through a leadership lens you will develop an understanding of how policies shape and influence the lives of children, families and communities and the role of leadership in this process. The role of advocacy for children, families and the profession as leadership work will be prioritised including attention to the profession’s commitment to reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

Learning outcomes
- articulate and demonstrate professional values and commitment to educational leadership for quality improvement in early childhood education and care
- engage with and critique the policy context in early childhood education and care, including the role of the educational leader in leading policy implementation
- demonstrate an ability to research and critique the scholarship on leadership in early childhood for the purpose of identifying leadership practices that support ongoing quality improvement
- demonstrate a growing commitment to leadership that can support and advocate for children, families, communities and the profession, including a commitment to upholding the profession’s commitment to reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
Workload
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: • 24 hours* of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement. *Subject to variation due to professional experience requirements
