Overview

This unit will provide you with a critical overview of approaches to support positive classroom cultures that facilitate learning and engagement of all students. Across the unit, you will examine different theories and strategies to support classroom management and be encouraged to reflectively critique your own beliefs and experiences of challenging behaviour. You will also consider different communication strategies and how these can be adapted to support the needs of diverse learners. Additionally, the unit will consider how you can create learning environments and opportunities that are supportive and challenging for a diverse range of students, including a focus on strategies to connect effectively with disengaged students.

Learning outcomes

  1. critically examine your personal beliefs, values and experiences about teaching and learning, classroom management, communication and motivation
  2. articulate your emerging professional learning, identifying significant change moments
  3. describe, evaluate and apply a variety of classroom management and communication strategies in educational contexts
  4. identify and apply processes for drawing on a range of theories and principles to create effective learning opportunities for students in a range of contexts
  5. outline and apply processes for engaging students in their learning, especially disengaged students.

Workload

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: • 24 hours* of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement. *Subject to variation due to professional experience requirements
