Overview

A significant element in the success of many learning designs is the quality and effectiveness of the synchronous learning sessions, including the interactions between learners and their educators. A synchronous learning session has many moving parts that a learning designer must be aware of, and design for, to maximise learning opportunities for students. Often learning designers find themselves in educational roles or providing detailed planning and resources for educators. This unit develops your skills to design and implement an effective synchronous learning session. You will learn training/classroom management skills and gain a clearer perspective on how to design for synchronous sessions, whether online, onsite, or in hybrid modes. The unit will explore theories of human interaction, frameworks for group settings, and other concepts which affect how humans behave in a synchronous setting. You will utilise this information to devise strategies, activities, and processes which address these needs and support trainers, educators and teachers in their experiences with implementing your learning designs.

Learning outcomes

  1. plan a synchronous learning session to achieve specific learning outcomes
  2. demonstrate knowledge of a range of types of learning activities
  3. implement a learning design in a synchronous session and provide recommendations for improvement
  4. produce resources and planning artefacts to support the implementation of synchronous learning activities
  5. critically discuss the implications of different modes of delivery, learning contexts, activity types, and assessment goals
  6. design for feedback loops in the learning activity

Workload

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: • 24 hours of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
