Overview

This unit explores science within four broad frames: science as a way of thinking and acting; research about student learning in science; teaching as the transformation of knowing science; and the engagement of learners through engaging learning experiences. The unit is designed to support you to examine curriculum and develop comprehensive science teaching built around big ideas in science. The relationship between science, technology and society, science curriculum and the nature of science as a discipline will also be considered. You will build understanding of science learning and teaching through collaborative planning.

Learning outcomes

  1. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of research into how students learn science and the implications for science teaching
  2. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of science concepts and the substance and structure of the content in primary science education
  3. organise science content into an effective learning and teaching sequence
  4. use effective teaching strategies and include a range of such strategies and resources in science education
  5. engage with colleagues with the purpose to improve practice.

Workload

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: • 24 hours* of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study *Subject to variation due to professional experience requirements Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
