This unit provides you with a theoretical overview of individual differences and how these may be assessed. It includes the theoretical background to the development of classes of tests, detailed examination of a range of models of human ability and other individual difference issues. The different approaches to the design and construction of personality assessment tools are addressed, and test evaluation methods and a review of recent trends in test development theory are covered. This includes the suitability of assessment tools for culturally and linguistically diverse groups. The unit also covers the administration, scoring and interpretation of a range of psychological tests and classification tools.

Learning outcomes
- demonstrate sound knowledge of the theoretical, historical and cultural bases of test development, particularly in relation to measures of ability and personality
- decide on the appropriate assessment procedures necessary to undertake specific psychological classification given the client’s individual attributes including their cultural and language background
- summarise the findings of psychological assessments in the form of a professional report
- appreciate the limitations of psychological assessment tools and how they can be misused.
Workload
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: • 24 hours of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement
