The world of work is rapidly changing and this has changed how careers are conceptualised, created, and sustained. This unit will prepare you to provide counselling for career development and career assessment services with diverse clients in a range of settings (e.g., schools, community organisations, private practice) using evidence-based tools and interventions. Topics include theories of career interests and work values, selecting tools for exploring career interests, models of career counselling intervention, exploring individual differences and diversity and their relevance to career planning and development, counselling for career transitions and change, and counselling for career development across the lifespan.

Learning outcomes
- describe major career development theories, concepts, and associated models and frameworks and apply them to practice with clients across the lifespan
- locate and evaluate reliable literature and market information to inform career planning in counselling
- identify and apply relevant assessment tools to support career exploration and development with diverse clients
- describe how career assessment and development can be conducted in sensitive ways with diverse clients considering intersectionality of identities and how they may impact career opportunities, access, and achievement
- apply case conceptualisation principles to develop career development plans in response to hypothetical case scenarios.
Workload
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: Clayton Campus • 12 hours of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities, 12 hours of scheduled learning delivered online via a combination of synchronous and asynchronous directed learning activities, and the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study OR • 24 hours of scheduled learning delivered online via a combination of synchronous and asynchronous directed learning activities, and the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study^ ^ International students studying in Australia are not permitted to undertake this scheduled learning delivery mode. Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
