Overview

The interconnected nature of social categorisations that apply to a given individual or group create overlapping and interdependent systems of discrimination, disadvantage, and sometime privilege. In this unit, you will explore the ways in which a client’s diverse characteristics multiply to create novel experiences of mental health and wellbeing that are distinctive from their component experiences. You will develop an understanding of intersecting characteristics, including race, age, nationality, language, gender, sex, sexuality, abilities, religion, and faith. Using the theoretical framework of intersectionality, you will analyse the experiences of diversity across various counselling populations, such as LGBTIQA+ people, culturally and linguistically diverse people, people with disabilities, and First Nations people.
