Overview

This unit prepares you to become an effective and knowledgeable specialist geography teacher. It develops your knowledge and understanding of current policies, theories, research-based principles and methods in geography education locally, nationally and internationally. In addition, you will research how these impact on curriculum and pedagogy for geography teachers. The unit involves research into various priorities, strategies, resources, policies, activities (e.g. ‘signature pedagogies’ such as fieldwork) and forms of assessment for an effective contemporary geography education.

Learning outcomes

  1. demonstrate an advanced understanding of contemporary approaches and trends in geography education in Australia and internationally
  2. develop and implement a differentiated and inclusive geography curriculum including the creative integration of digital and geospatial technologies
  3. conduct research into the field of geography education
  4. engage learners in geography education to promote a more equitable and sustainable community
  5. develop an ongoing capacity to create engaging activities and units of work in response to changing educational policy and theory for secondary school students
  6. understand the role of geography both as a separate discipline and as part of an integrated curriculum related to both the Australian and Victorian Curriculum.

Workload

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: • 24 hours* of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; • 2 hours* of fieldwork activities in a bespoke tutorial session to complement and extend the above, and • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement. *Subject to variation due to professional experience requirements.
