In this unit, you will explore a wide range of language teaching methodologies and approaches to prepare you for effective language teaching in the classroom. Through an examination of language policies, curricula, and assessment frameworks at the Victorian, national and global level, as well as relevant research literature, you will critically reflect on how these inform decisions related to the teaching and learning of languages. You will engage in a range of interactive and collaborative tasks to build up your practical knowledge of language teaching. Drawing on literature and research studies, you will also review, analyse, consolidate and synthesise your knowledge and skills as you work towards advancing your capacities as a teacher of languages.

Learning outcomes
- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the historical, philosophical, curriculum, and pedagogical foundations of languages education, including key research and policy perspectives
- apply knowledge of curriculum design and lesson planning to develop effective and inclusive language learning experiences
- evaluate and implement a variety of teaching strategies and methodologies to support diverse learners in different curriculum contexts
- engage critically with research, policy, and resources to inform effective language teaching and learning practices.
Workload
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: • 24 hours* of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement. *Subject to variation due to professional experience requirements
