This unit prepares specialist teachers of media to teach in secondary schools. Drawing on a range of national and international research, the unit introduces you to media education perspectives and issues. These would include ways of integrating studies in news media, film making and critical media studies, including critical media literacy. The unit provides opportunities to engage in your specialised knowledge, with a view to the development of secondary school curriculum. The unit prepares you to expand your knowledge to best approach the changing media landscape and to support secondary school students to understand the challenges of media literacy in the contemporary world.

Learning outcomes
- critically investigate different rationales and scoping of the prescribed media curriculum
- identify, evaluate and use different resources for teaching media arts across different year levels
- demonstrate ability to plan curriculum and teach media arts lessons (both practical and theoretical)
- identify pedagogical issues in media education
- develop and demonstrate understanding of teacher generated and prescribed assessment programs.
Workload
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: • 24 hours* of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement. *Subject to variation due to professional experience requirements
