The aim of this unit is to develop general professional psychological competencies in the assessment of cognitive abilities and some neuropsychological constructs. You will undertake advanced exploration and analysis of the psychological testing process, including scholarly consideration and debate of psychometric approaches to cognitive and intellectual assessment across the lifespan. Theories and methods of assessment, and issues of validity and reliability, cultural and ethical considerations, and linguistic factors will be considered. You will acquire skills in the administration, scoring and interpretation of pertinent psychological tests, integration of assessment data from multiple sources, and appropriate report writing. You will also develop skills in constructive critical appraisal and clinical judgment in the assessment of learning difficulties, intellectual disability, giftedness, memory, and information processing in a range of client groups. Case conceptualisation and intervention planning skills will also be developed.

- demonstrate knowledge of the impact of psychosocial influences on cognitive performance and cognitive development across the lifespan
- demonstrate knowledge of the professional ethical, cultural, language and psychometric issues that arise when assessing for cognitive abilities across the lifespan
- demonstrate skills in administration, scoring, and interpretation of cognitive instruments with a range of client groups
- demonstrate written and verbal communication skills in reporting the conclusions of cognitive assessments
- demonstrate reflective skills regarding the use of cognitive tests in professional practice.
Workload
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: A. On campus delivery • 24 hours of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities; and • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study B. Flexible delivery • 24 hours of scheduled learning of which 6 hours will be delivered on campus and 18 hours will be delivered online via a combination of synchronous and asynchronous directed learning activities; and • the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
