This is an intensive unit that introduces you to research in education. The sessions and online activities focus on the planning of an education research project. You will explore how to construct effective research questions, a range of research methodologies (including data collection strategies) and consider ethical issues in the conduct of educational research. This unit is the prerequisite for EDF5614 Research project in education and assignments will involve planning the project which will draw on a particular methodology (e.g. survey, case study, discourse analysis, narrative inquiry, practitioner research).

Learning outcomes
- locate a research interest within broader research perspectives and methodologies in the field of education and social sciences
- formulate research questions that are congruent with a chosen research approach
- design ways to generate and analyse qualitative and quantitative data that are congruent with specific research questions
- use research processes with due regard to ethical procedures
- justify proposed research through scholarly and critical discussion.
Workload
The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 288 hours per teaching period comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Usually, you can expect to engage with: • 22 hours of scheduled learning delivered on campus via weekly/regular directed learning activities, 14 hours of scheduled learning delivered online via a combination of synchronous and asynchronous directed learning activities and the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study; OR • 22 hours of scheduled learning delivered synchronously online, and 14 hours of scheduled learning delivered online via a combination of synchronous and asynchronous directed learning activities and the remaining hours to be allocated towards self-directed/independent study^ ^ International students studying in Australia are not permitted to undertake this scheduled learning delivery mode Scheduled learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
