Overview

The aim of this unit is to familiarise you with programming by utilising two high-level programming languages, namely R and Python. You will be taught structured programming by means of practical sessions, which will cover fundamental data structures and algorithmic thinking. Furthermore, you will become acquainted with various basic R and Python libraries that are used for data analysis and visualisation. By the end of the unit, you will be able to apply the knowledge you have acquired to address business-related issues.

Learning outcomes

  1. define the fundamental concepts of programming, such as data types, variables, operators, functions and control structures.
  2. identify the packages used for data processing in R and Python to perform data manipulation.
  3. choose the appropriate packages and functions in R and Python to create data visualisations.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
