This unit involves a critical review of recent empirical work and techniques in modern macroeconometrics. The topics to be covered include: i) the techniques used to estimate causal effects for use in policy-making, and applying these in a range of contexts; ii) structural vector autoregressions; iii) practical applications of these topics that address macroeconomic issues. On completion of this unit, you should be familiar with recent developments in these fields, and have developed the skills to undertake empirical work. Further, you should be able to critically evaluate empirical work and related policy implications.

- specify, estimate, and interpret tools for modern empirical macroeconomic analysis such as vector autoregressions and local projections
- understand the modelling of trends and cycles
- understand methods to utilise large datasets for macroeconomic analysis.
- understand and critically assess methods used in applied settings such as by the Reserve Bank of Australia
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
