Overview

This unit exposes you to a variety of industry-standard game development environments and development techniques. You will develop an appreciation and basic working knowledge of a number of different platforms used in contemporary games development. The unit aims to provide you with a practical insight into contemporary, industry-standard, games development process and game development environments. The studio environment will facilitate considerable peer interaction, in particular in the critique of game designs and the development of game prototypes. The unit provides knowledge and skills that you can apply within your game development projects in the third year studio project/s (FIT3039/FIT3040) and across all subsequent units.

Learning outcomes

  1. Describe the games development pipeline as used in industry, including roles and development life cycles, and place into practice in the context of a game development project;
  2. Critically analyse and research a game development environment, then structure and present your findings to an audience;
  3. Evaluate the appropriateness of a game development environment to a specific game design brief;
  4. Construct a basic game, using game design knowledge and programming with a contemporary game development environment, and present a demonstration of the completed game to an audience; and
  5. Work collaboratively in a team environment.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled online and face to face learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated reading and preparation for scheduled activities. The unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning and online engagement.
