Overview

This unit develops your understanding of information technology strategy and governance by introducing key theories and frameworks (e.g., Strategic Alignment and maturity, Knowledge Management, and COBIT governance framework) in addition to facilitating active learning through case studies. The unit discusses IT governance in the context of strategy implementation and considers the current development of IT in business contexts, including digital transformation, Big Data, artificial intelligence, cyber security and risks, and the associated human and infrastructure management issues. The unit takes into account relevant legislation and standards and draws on case studies to differentiate strategies focused primarily on people, business processes, and technologies that can facilitate each approach.

This unit has threshold mark hurdles. You must achieve at least 45% of the available marks in the final scheduled assessment, at least 45% in total for in-semester assessments, and an overall unit mark of 50% or more to be able to pass the unit. If you do not achieve the threshold mark, you will receive a fail grade (NH) and a maximum mark of 45 for the unit.

Learning outcomes

  1. Describe the key concepts underpinning dominant approaches of IT strategy and governance;
  2. Evaluate the application of these approaches in business contexts considering their strengths and limitations, with a particular focus on people, business processes, and supporting technologies;
  3. Recognise the role of emerging technologies and associated risks in IT strategy and governance.
  4. Formulate plans for IT strategy and governance that can help organisations achieve business goals by leveraging IT systems
  5. Demonstrate the ability to work in teams.

Workload

Applied sessions are scheduled from week 2 to week 12. Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled online and face to face learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated reading and preparation for scheduled teaching activities.
