Overview

This unit examines the core principles and interrelationships of computer architecture and data communication, providing you with a comprehensive understanding of how computing systems operate and interact within modern digital infrastructures. You will explore two key areas of study: computer architecture and computer networks, developing the analytical and technical skills needed to evaluate and design efficient computing environments. The computer architecture area of study investigates the structure and operation of system components including the central processing unit, memory hierarchy, storage devices, and input and output subsystems. It also analyses the role of operating systems in process management, file systems, and resource allocation, with an emphasis on performance and system optimisation. The computer networks area of study focuses on the design and operation of communication systems, including network architectures, the TCP IP model, switching and routing mechanisms, local and wireless networks, and the fundamentals of network performance, reliability, and security. By integrating these two areas, the unit equips you with the conceptual and practical foundation to analyse, design, and optimise contemporary computing and communication systems
