Overview

This unit focuses on modern software quality assurance and testing tools and techniques to assure the quality of software systems. You will learn different quality aspects of quality attributes, e.g., reliability, human, and security. You will design test cases and apply systematic testing techniques in the context of individual modules and entire systems, using appropriate tools and techniques to automate the testing process where possible. Finally, you will analyze and report code quality issues using modern code review practices with tools and measures.

Learning outcomes

1. Identify and prioritise quality attributes for a software system
2. Design test cases using black box and white box techniques.
3. Select appropriate quality assurance strategies and testing techniques to develop and document software testing plans.
4. Implement software tests following a documented plan, using modern programming techniques and best practices
5. Automate the execution of software tests and code analysis using continuous integration frameworks.
6. Report code quality issues using contemporary, data-driven code review practices.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled online and face to face learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated reading and preparation for scheduled teaching activities.
