Overview

You will be introduced to the theoretical material relating to injuries generally, their forensic classification and assessment. The particular issue of assessing deaths in custody and from torture are addressed. The practical aspects of the assessment of injuries is the focus of work in the mortuary, along with learning special dissections. These include exposure of the spinal cord, vertebral arteries, examination of the facial skeleton and the subcutaneous tissues of the body. Finally, the principles of photography in relation to autopsy, both theoretical and practical, are presented.

Learning outcomes

  1. Distinguish and discuss the different types of injuries confronted in forensic pathology practice.
  2. Apply knowledge of injuries to carefully assess potential circumstances in particular cases.
  3. Assess the approaches to examining deaths in custody.
  4. Demonstrate proficiency in photographic technique as it relates to autopsy documentation.
  5. Examine, describe and interpret injuries, including any special dissections required, in forensic pathology practice.

Workload

6 hours off campus, self-directed learning per week, 4 hours teacher directed learning per week, plus 20 contact hours over 3 block days.
