Overview

This unit prepares you to apply financial, analytical, and strategic principles across the full lifecycle of global medicines development. You will build skills in financial modeling, Excel, and generative AI; design and measure data strategies; and develop comprehensive business cases and operating plans. Core topics include finance and accounting fundamentals, cost-effectiveness and ROI analysis, market access strategies, project management, venture capital, and pathways to product launch. Emphasis is placed on data visualization, storytelling, and ethical considerations in data collection and interpretation, enabling you to create and evaluate sustainable, evidence-based business plans in the global biopharmaceutical arena.

Learning outcomes

  1. Apply core financial and accounting principles to budgeting, forecasting, and evaluating global medicines development projects
  2. Use Excel, generative AI, and other analytical tools to collect, organize, model, and interpret financial and operational data
  3. Develop and present a comprehensive business case that incorporates cost analysis, market assessment, and strategic recommendations
  4. Plan, implement, and monitor projects using proven project management and operating plan development techniques
  5. Evaluate ROI, cost-effectiveness, and market access pathways to inform strategic decisions in global medicines development
  6. Communicate insights through compelling data visualization and storytelling, while upholding ethical standards in data collection and interpretation.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of in-person and online learning activities as well as independent study. The unit requires on average 10-12 hours of learning activities per week, including teacher directed learning, independent study and reading time, participation in online discussions, research and preparation for assignments.
