Overview

This internship unit gives you real-world experience in clinical or research genomics in commercial or hospital-based environments. Senior staff at the host organisation will mentor you in professional clinical/research genomics using a work integrated learning framework. You will develop skills that include ethically working with patient data, variant calling, report writing and working in a team environment. The unit coordinator will monitor your work and provide additional support and mentoring.

Learning outcomes

  1. Apply genome curation approaches to analyse clinically or commercially relevant data sets in a professional environment;
  2. Develop a working knowledge of the generation of genomic analysis reports and understand ethical considerations
  3. Employ critical and creative thinking to analyse scientific data;
  4. Apply interpersonal, teamwork and time management skills in a professional environment;
  5. Effectively communicate internship outcomes in verbal and written form using appropriate tools to a scientific audience.

Workload

For semester 1 period, an average of 24 hour per week. At least 2 days per week on site at the host location and 8 hours independent study per week OR For placement in summer B period, a 5/6-week intensive placement will occur, with 4-5 days per week on site at the host location and independent study in the weeks following, equivalent to 288 total hours.
