Overview

In this unit, you will develop knowledge and skills to enhance your education career, whether you are teaching at pre-registration level, preceptoring students on clinical placement, or supporting clinical education in your workplace. You will gain knowledge of educational theories and teaching strategies to optimise learning in the health professions across many and varied contexts. You will develop and apply skills in curriculum and lesson planning, teaching, assessment, feedback, and evaluation for learners and programs. On completion of the unit, you will be able to articulate your own philosophy of education in the health professions and have a plan for further learning in health professions education.

Learning outcomes

  1. Develop a personal teaching philosophy in health professions education.
  2. Describe and apply theories and concepts that inform educational practice in the health professions.
  3. Identify and apply principles of curriculum design and assessment in health professions curricula.
  4. Critique contemporary educational methods in teaching and training health professionals.
  5. Design, implement, assess, evaluate and reflect on an educational programme for adult learners.
  6. Describe effective feedback and evaluation approaches to support learners.

Workload

This unit will be delivered entirely online through the Monash Moodle learning management system. Activities include readings, pre-recorded lectures, online discussions, and interactive sessions via Zoom cloud conferencing, self-directed learning and completion of assignments. There will be 12 hours of teacher directed study per week, including pre-recorded lectures, online interactive workshops and tutorial classes. 12 hours per week of self-directed study including readings, engagement of online discussions, and reflective written work. Total per week = 24 hours.
