Overview

This unit aims to introduce you to various aspects of laboratory immunology. The course is laboratory based with small group in-class discussions to ensure a thorough theoretical understanding of techniques. Topics include production of polyclonal antisera and monoclonal antibodies, purification of antibodies, structure and properties of immunoglobulins (antibodies), electrophoresis and other techniques for detection of antigen/antibody reactions. Diagnostic immunology techniques may include immunofluorescence and microscopy, flow cytometry, enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and analysis of plasma proteins. You will also develop core competencies in laboratory skills including record keeping, calculations, and safe work practices
