Overview

This unit provides a practical and theoretical introduction to what it means to be an IT professional, or a professional with IT expertise today. You will encounter a range of issues relevant to professional practice in the workplace, as well as an understanding of the wider responsibilities that professionals are called upon to uphold in society as they apply their IT expertise. Topics addressed include: the nature of IT as professional expertise; professional communications; situational management; teamwork in professional and organisational settings; problem solving and decision making; applications of professional ethics and relevant legal frameworks. Skills and knowledge will be developed and applied through a range of collaborative, individual and reflective tasks in relevant communication modes and formats.

Learning outcomes

  1. Describe the social, ethical and legal implications of working with IT expertise in a professional capacity;
  2. Understand how to make and justify decisions in various professional and organisational situations, by applying relevant professional ethics (e.g. the ACS Code of Ethics) and relevant legal frameworks;
  3. Effectively plan, develop and deliver a range of professional communications using appropriate techniques, concepts and technologies;
  4. Effectively contribute professionally to teams using appropriate techniques, concepts and technologies;
  5. Effectively conduct critical research for specific purposes within professional settings;
  6. Systematically develop and effectively communicate your personal and professional reflections to inform your current and future professional practice.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled online and face to face learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated reading and preparation for scheduled teaching activities.
