This unit explores the legal, ethical, and policy frameworks that govern children’s health care in Victoria. You will examine key issues such as consent, adolescent autonomy, mental health, reproductive rights, and end-of-life decisions. Through legal case studies, debates, group activities, and written assessments, you will develop the skills to analyse and apply the law in complex, real-world contexts.

Learning outcomes
- Identify and apply fundamental legal principles governing children’s health law.
- Critically analyse and persuasively evaluate key concepts and policies in children’s health law, contextualised within a broad range of practice, policy and theoretical perspectives.
- Conduct effective legal research using primary and secondary sources to support arguments and analysis.
- Communicate effectively and persuasively to a range of topics on child health law when undertaking both collaborative and individual activities.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. The unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
