Overview

The unit introduces the concept and categories of intellectual property law and the interface between them within a national and global context using case studies; it examines by way of an overview the rationales for and the nature of a range of intellectual property rights including copyright, trademarks, passing off, geographical indications, industrial designs, patents, protection of confidential information (trade secrets), plant breeder's rights and circuit layouts.

Learning outcomes

  1. Distinguish and evaluate key concepts of each of the intellectual property legal regimes in a theoretical and policy context, taking account of national and global dimensions as well as the influence of regulation seeking to protect private data.
  2. Demonstrate intellectual and practical skills to evaluate, synthesise and apply provisions of intellectual property statutory law and related case law and generate appropriate and reasoned responses to complex legal problems.
  3. Communicate ideas relating to the protection of intellectual property rights to a specified audience in ways that are effective, appropriate and persuasive
  4. Evaluate the role of law in regulating and facilitating commercial transactions.
  5. Collaboration and effective communication for a range of audiences.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. The unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
