This unit focuses on the law concerning children, at a domestic, regional, and international level. It will provide an in-depth analysis of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, its strengths and weaknesses, and the challenges for the full realisation of children’s rights in the 21st Century. In doing so, it will explore the exercise (and limits) of child autonomy and decision-making, as well as the relationship between children, parents, and the state.

Learning outcomes
- Demonstrate understanding of the fundamental concepts and policies underlying children’s rights on an international level, as well as the current challenges and debates under Australian law.
- Critically analyse and convincingly respond to current debates in children’s rights.
- Investigate, interpret and synthesise complex information relating to children’s rights, and use this as the basis for the articulation of compelling legal argument.
- Communicate effectively and persuasively in both oral and written forms to a range of audiences on topics relevant to children’s rights.
