Overview

This unit will explore how the international community has responded to the most heinous international crimes, such as genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression in the context of our modern history. The successes and failures in enforcement of international crimes by States and in international tribunals and the International Criminal Court, will be considered, as will the future of international criminal justice.

Learning outcomes

  1. Articulate, interpret and evaluate the principles and doctrines of international criminal law and apply them convincingly to complex and contested fact scenarios.
  2. Undertake scholarly research, critically evaluate the theoretical, historical, institutional and policy foundations of international criminal justice, and comprehensively assess the interaction between legal doctrine and the broader political, social and cultural contexts in which international criminal justice operates.
  3. Analyse and interpret key primary legal materials relating to international criminal justice and demonstrate high level understanding of different scholarly approaches to their interpretation and application.
  4. Communicate effectively, appropriately and persuasively, for a range of audiences by developing well-supported arguments on complex issues pertaining to international criminal justice.

Workload

24 contact hours per teaching period (either intensive, semi-intensive or semester long, depending on the Faculty resources, timetabling and requirements). You will be expected to do reading set for class, and to undertake additional research and reading applicable to a 6 credit point unit.
