Royal Commissions and public inquiries play a significant role in exposing corruption, governance failures and wrongdoing. This unit is designed to equip students to understand the functioning of royal commissions and public inquiries and to deal with them from different perspectives. It will examine key features of the functioning of commissions and public inquiries, including the rules regulating their powers and processes and contemporary policy issues generated by their reports. The unit has a contemporary nature and will focus on current issues and case studies.

Learning outcomes
- Interpret and transmit knowledge of selected contemporary issues relating to commissions and public inquiries and to resolve such issues with creativity and initiative to new situations in the professional practice and/or for further learning.
- Analyse critically, reflect on, and synthesise complex information, problems, concepts, and theories in relation to the functioning of commissions and public inquiries.
- Research and apply knowledge of legal and policy-based issues relevant to commissions and public inquiries.
- Use cognitive, technical, and creative skills to generate and evaluate at an abstract level complex ideas and concepts relevant to the study of commissions and public inquiries.
