Overview

This unit develops further your physical understanding and analytical skills by including the viscous nature of internal and external aerodynamic flows in the formulation and analysis of general aerodynamic problems. Topics include control volume analysis of viscous incompressible flow, channel and pipe flow, boundary layer flow and free shear flows like jets and wakes, including momentum integral analysis, similarity analysis and similarity solutions of these equations as they pertain to wall-bounded and free shear flows and an introduction to turbulence. Convective heat transfer in these laminar and turbulent flows is also considered.

Assessment

The Handbook lists an examination for this unit.

5Final assessmentExamination60%Threshold

Continuous assessment: 40% Final assessment: 60% This unit contains threshold hurdle requirements that you must achieve to be able to pass the unit. You are required to achieve at least 45% in the total continuous assessment component and at least 45% in the final assessment component. The consequence of not achieving a hurdle requirement is a fail grade (NH) and a maximum mark of 45 for the unit.

Assessment details may change. Please refer to the assessment information in Moodle closer to the start of the teaching period.

Learning outcomes

  1. Predict pertinent characteristics such as drag, lift, mass flow rate and pressure drop of internal and external incompressible aerodynamic flows.
  2. Derive the governing equations for incompressible viscous wall-bounded flows such as channel, pipe and boundary layer flows, and apply these equations to calculate the drag due to skin friction in incompressible laminar and turbulent wall-bounded flows.
  3. Derive the governing equations for incompressible viscous free-shear flows such as jets and wakes and apply these equations to calculate the propulsion and bluff-body drag, respectively in these incompressible laminar and turbulent free-shear flows.
  4. Formulate engineering solutions for the external and internal aerodynamics of flight vehicles by synthesis of incompressible, viscous flow theories.
  5. Analyse convective heat transfer of internal and external viscous aerodynamic flows operating in the laminar and turbulent regime.
  6. Justify the analytical framework and data sources employed in the development of engineering solutions, aerodynamic designs and aerodynamic laboratory experiments when reporting their work.

Workload

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities.
