Overview

This unit is designed to assist your understanding of, and engagement with advanced practice. Advanced practice is not simply a title or role. It is a source of advice, support and guidance within the workplace. Advanced practitioners influence patients, colleagues and especially junior practitioners to improve patient experiences and outcomes. The advanced practitioner’s mindset is cultivated through a focus on evidence-based practice, peer review, adaptive communication and leadership development. In this unit you will; • gain insight into other health professions and their issues with respect to practice • share evidence-based ideas and learn to adapt your communication to various audiences • network and have open discussion with peers and leaders from a variety of disciplines • complete assessments that require you to: • identify professional issues and communicate actions • make provision for context and plan strategies • identify and mitigate risks • apply leadership principles • use reflection as a strategic planning and quality improvement tool

Learning outcomes

  1. Explain the roles and medico-legal responsibilities of advanced health care practitioners as they apply to varied professional settings.
  2. Apply appropriate ethical, professional and cultural considerations as appropriate to advanced practice.
  3. Demonstrate an ability to analyse information, give capacity building feedback, plan for, and adapt to variations in workplace circumstances.
  4. Appraise workplace and health care risks and apply effective management strategies to promote adaptable and flexible responses.
  5. Apply findings and recommendations from research, commissions, inquiries and consumer advocacy to improve patient experience and health outcomes.
  6. Translate knowledge, evidence and clinical practice guidelines to influence health care practice and lead change.
  7. Critically reflect, revise and adapt actions, rethink plans and apply findings to advance the quality and effectiveness of healthcare practice.
  8. Demonstrate a knowledge of interprofessional priorities to further develop collaborative practice in the workplace.

Workload

10 hours of teacher directed study per week including Moodle content, readings, online media and assessment tasks. 1 hour of tutorials led by teacher each week 1 hour of workshop/applied activities led by teacher each week **2-hour seminar during AT2 – midway through semester 12 hours per week of self-directed study Total per week = 24 hours Proposed mandatory attendance requirements (for off – Campus students) - Online seminar session
