Overview

Business executives develop and execute strategy in dynamic and complex environments shaped by technology, competition, political and social change and global influences; in the modern world, industry boundaries are being restructured and entirely new industries are being created. Strategic Management involves the development, evaluation and application of strategy to create successful and sustainable long-term organisation futures. Contemporary strategic challenges and opportunities for executives and senior and middle managers such as ESG (environmental, social and governance) risk, governance and sustainability will be addressed.

Learning outcomes

  1. analyse and evaluate the internal and external environments of an organisation to identify and understand strategic issues in context
  2. critically analyse and apply strategic management theories, concepts and tools, and generate the insights necessary for strategic decision-making
  3. select and apply appropriate theoretical and practical knowledge as the basis for evaluating and recommending well-reasoned strategic options to help organisations achieve sustainable competitive advantage
  4. evaluate and apply frameworks that address environmental, social and governance (ESG) risks in strategic and operational decision-making and strengthen corporate governance.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 153 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
