Learning outcomes

  1. Apply fundamental principles relating to the operating characteristics, design layout and friction and lubrication of various internal combustion engines.
  2. Assess the engine cycles and heat transfer in internal combustion engines.
  3. Evaluate various air and fuel delivery systems, in-cylinder flow processes and combustion.
  4. Analyse the thermochemistry of fuels, exhaust flow and emissions from internal combustion engines.
  5. Appraise the use of biodiesel blends, biofuels and other renewable fuels for internal combustion engines.

Workload

The minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of 3-6 hours of scheduled learning activities and 6-9 hours of independent study per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher-directed learning, peer-directed learning and online engagement.
