Overview

This unit reflects an introduction to the four themes of the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (MD) curriculum: Theme I (Personal and Professional Development), Theme II (Society, Population, Health and Illness), Theme III (Scientific Basis of Clinical Practice) and Theme IV (Clinical Skills). You will begin to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes required by a medical student. Content is focused on basic medical and behavioural sciences and is organised to assist you to integrate and apply learning related to clinical and other problems through integrated cases. Clinical Skills introduces you to key concepts and techniques in clinical practice. Site visits introduce you to the health care system and clinical practice.

Assessment in this unit includes hurdle assessment tasks. Failure of any hurdle assessment task may result in failure of the unit. To pass this unit you must meet the compulsory course requirements. This unit is designed to prepare you to become a registered and or professionally accredited practitioner and contains course level attendance requirements.

Learning outcomes

  1. Identify the ethical, professional and personal responsibilities and behaviours consistent with good clinical practice and professional codes of practice.
  2. Define the fundamental legal responsibilities and ethical principles for good clinical and professional practice.
  3. Outline key concepts in population health, epidemiology and measurement of health and disease in populations including social, ethical, economic and environmental factors.
  4. Name the differing health care professionals and their role in patient care.
  5. Identify factors that can impact on the health, wellbeing and access to health care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and communities.
  6. Describe the biological, psychological, social factors and clinical concepts relevant to health and illness across the human lifespan.
  7. Elicit histories and perform physical examination for specified systems and perform clinical procedures in simulated environments.
  8. Collate and interpret clinical findings in order to develop a simple list of differential diagnoses and outline management principles for common core conditions.

Workload

Note: This is a 24 credit point unit delivered across a full year which equates to a 12 credit point workload per semester. In each semester you will be provided with 12 hours of teacher directed study per week including workshops (5 hours) together with 7 hours of seminars or practical assessment sessions and lectures (real time or recorded) plus 12 hours of self-directed study. Total per week = 24 hours
