Overview

MED5105 is focused on facilitating the transition of students into the medical workplace as beginning interns. You will participate in a range of learning experiences which are designed to substantially enhance your clinical reasoning, diagnostic and case management skills. You will participate in supervised clinical practice and related learning activities (learning modules). You will have the opportunity to select discipline specialty area for one clinical placement rotation to enhance your experience and development of knowledge and skills in a particular area of clinical practice.

Learning outcomes

  1. Demonstrate ethical, professional and personal responsibility and behaviours consistent with good clinical practice and professional codes of practice.
  2. Provide safe, compassionate, and patient-centred health care.
  3. Use knowledge and skills to apply strategies for delivering culturally safe health care with respect to individual and cultural and linguistic diversity, strategies for incorporating anti-racist and affirmative action approaches in health care practice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients and their families.
  4. Source, interpret, critically review, and apply core medical and scientific knowledge from current literature to make clinical judgements in health care.
  5. Apply key concepts in population health, epidemiology and measurement of health and disease in populations in clinical practice.
  6. Explain health system management and make judgements to achieve the judicious use of health care resources.
  7. Apply specialised knowledge, skills and reasoning in clinical consultations to formulate and justify diagnosis, investigations and management plan.
  8. Select, interpret and justify investigations based upon clinical findings, pathology of the disease, practicality and cost effectiveness and use results to develop and justify a management plan.

Workload

The workload for this unit is 576 hours comprised of learning activities in clinical settings (5 x 6 week block placements) including work-based learning activities (such as ward rounds, clinical attendance and case meetings), seminars, tutorials, workshops, prescribed directed learning modules and private study.
