Overview

This unit is designed to develop your moral reasoning about the conduct of business in the global context. You will achieve this by exploring theories of ethics and justice in business and in its relationships with society, across different cultural and religious traditions; and reflecting on your own moral development through analysis of ethical and unethical behaviours in business.

Learning outcomes

1. critically analyse, reflect on and explain the challenges of business from social, legal, political, cultural and ecological perspectives
2. synthesise and develop an informed position on sustainable business issues and practices for managing the ethical economy
3. critically appraise participatory methodologies of the ‘multilevel stakeholders' form of governance, and reflect on diverse identities, positionalities, and interests
4. critically appraise, interpret and translate contested issues (resistance and movements) that create pressure on businesses to integrate transformative management practices that foster more open, inclusive, just and sustainable institutions
5. demonstrate knowledge or skills for crafting sustainable futures for people, organisations, communities, and/or the environment.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
