This unit is designed to develop your understanding of how managers construct and renew a talented workforce. Content addresses building employee ability, motivation and opportunity. There is a particular focus on the management and career development of professionals. The unit addresses the theories that underpin talent management as well as talent management in practice.

Learning outcomes
- explain the strategic importance of talent management by understanding how to attract, select, develop and retain employees in the context of dynamic change
- identify and examine the human resource management practices and competitive forces which influence strategic approaches to talent management
- develop skills in identifying talent and evaluating the talent renewal needs of professionals
- critically analyse talent management challenges faced by different types employers and formulate and evaluate potential ways in which they may address these challenges
- demonstrate knowledge or skills for crafting sustainable futures for people, organisations, communities, and/or the environment.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
