Overview

In this unit you will learn about international differences in how people and work are managed. You will also learn about various historical, economic, legal, technological, political and cultural contexts associated with international differences and similarities in regulation of work and jobs. Since working people are a source of competitive advantage for enterprises, you will learn about employment, work and people-management practices and strategies in locally-owned businesses, the public sector, and multinational corporations. Topics include: internationalisation and globalisation; divergence and convergence in national systems of regulation including in English-speaking, European, and Asian countries; varieties of capitalism and other forms of political economy; diverse people-management practices; corporate social responsibility; international labour standards, including differences and similarities between countries; implications of the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and other new technologies for managers, working people, employment relations and working conditions.

Learning outcomes

  1. evaluate the implications of globalisation for the management of working people via human resources management and industrial relations system in different national contexts
  2. examine institutions governing working conditions, including international labour standards, trade agreements, and corporate codes of conduct
  3. demonstrate knowledge or skills for crafting sustainable futures for people, organisations, communities, and/or the environment.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
