The unit will provide a foundation from which to explore the broad nature of organisations and the function of management in relation to its people, purpose and structure. You will critically explore organisations from a multi-level organisational perspective to develop your understanding and appreciation of current debates and challenges in relation to managing organisations. The unit will commence with an overview of an organisation's human resources and its role in achieving its strategic objectives. The function of managers in achieving strategic goals will also be analysed including the manager's role in guiding the development of the internal environment and structure in order to creatively respond to the complexities of its external environment. Understanding how to ethically, and sustainably, construct, lead and mobilise a diverse workforce in a globally complex world is an important requirement of the modern manager.

Learning outcomes
- analyse the broad nature of organisations and the function of management in relation to its people, purpose and structure
- critically analyse the importance of aligning individual, the team and the organisation's contribution in attaining organisational goals
- assess the role of ethics and social responsibility in determining the culture and internal practices of an organisation in the overall conduct of its business
- critically apply and evaluate contemporary management theory and research and generate creative business solutions to current organisational issues
- understand the impact of complex external environments on organisational function
- demonstrate knowledge or skills for crafting sustainable futures for people, organisations, communities, and/or the environment.
Workload
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
