Overview

Global political risk has become an issue of enhanced concern to governments, firms and NGOs because of increased cross border contestation and populism within nations. Executives currently report that staff engaged in the global business field have seldom received an education that prepares them to address associated problems. Accordingly, you will be introduced to key analytical approaches that theorise the relationship between politics and global business risk and the geo-strategic strategies governments and firms might engage when managing problems stemming from political volatility, the evolving nature of government-business relations, and the geographic relocation of global business.

Learning outcomes

1. understand a range of concepts and theories that help explain geopolitics and business globalisation and the rules that govern them
2. analyse in an informed manner geopolitical issues and the activities of states and firms
3. critically evaluate and report on the ideas and agendas of global state and business actors
4. assess how state and business actors in both the developed and developing world are addressing global issues of power, security, economic development and sustainability
5. demonstrate knowledge or skills for crafting sustainable futures for people, organisations, communities, and/or the environment.

Workload

Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. You are expected to complete all pre-class activities prior to your scheduled class, and post-class activities should be completed after your scheduled class. Learning activities may include a combination of teacher directed, peer directed and online engagement activities.
